 Stewardship – Make ‘Em Laugh!

Okay, I admit it. I’m a ham. So when I volunteer to write and produce funny skits for the climactic event in my parish’s year-long stewardship program, then by gum, I get to perform in them. Which may be one of the main reasons that St. Paul’s Stewardship Committee finds itself blessed by my presence year in and year out.

Here I am in last year’s skits playing “Edythe,” the chair of the parish Budget Committee. I’m reacting with surprise and delight when my Guardian Angel (played by parishioner Mary Davies) shows up for the first committee meeting.

Acting. I love it.

Below, you’ll find two sets of original skits that you can download for use in your church community. Because we plan for three sets of skits, we decided to use the familiar convention of Year A, Year B, and Year C to group them. However, the skits are not tied to the church calendar and may be used during any liturgical year. And though they do contain some common characters, each set stands on its own.

The Year A set, “Edythe’s Gifts,” follows new member Edythe as she moves deeper into parish life and grows into her own God-given generosity.

In the Year B set, “Ever Blessing, Ever Blest,” Edythe takes on the chair of the parish’s singing Budget Committee, accompanied by her ever-faithful guardian angel.

At St. Paul’s, we perform these skits during a festive evening of rich desserts, testimonials from parishioners, fellowship, and fun. Feel free to modify the skits to fit your own church’s needs and use them however you like. I’d love to hear back how they work for you — at margaret@inthecourtyard.com.

Religion and money. Now there’s a pairing to raise the hairs on the back of your head … which is exactly what makes it so funny.

Best wishes for your stewardship program in the coming year. And make ‘em laugh!
