Haiku

Freed from solitude,
in the company of friends,
delivered of verse.

        -- Greg, Seattle

A friend listens, hears
what hides behind the words, and
brings deliverance.

        -- Brad, Port Townsend

Alert, she inclined
her ear to a sound and then
returned to her rest.

        -- Greg, Seattle

My heart longs for joy
My soul rests in blossom’s depth
Moon hangs low. Kisses me.

        -- Suzanna, Seattle

Fear called to be saved
Protection comes that dark night
In moonlight I rest.

        -- Merryl, Seattle

The soul’s simple goal
Yearns wholeness from desire’s pangs
Lo, Again, Again.

        -- Jeff, Seattle

The pangs of love—Oh
how my heart aches—all pain, all joy,
all this for love.

        -- Margaret, In the Courtyard

Grass whispers. Stream chirps.
Sunlight plays with leaves. Noon.
My eyes rest on you.

        -- Maria, Seattle

I saved wood all year.
The fire protects me now, ah,
I can rest easy.

        -- Wanda, Seattle

A warm cup of love
is the voice of winter night
no more complain.

        -- Sarah, Seattle

Love blossoms in voice
bountifully gifts my ear
with sounds of my soul.

        -- Maia Rose K., Seattle

During a workshop at the East West Bookshop that I gave in January, participants wrote haiku using words and phrases from this psalm.

Psalm 116: 1-4; 6-8

I love the LORD, because he has heard
      my voice and my supplications.

Because he has inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

The snares of death encompassed me;
      the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
      I suffered distress and anguish.

Then I called on the name of the LORD:
“O LORD, I pray, save my life!”

The LORD protects the simple;
when I was brought low, he saved me.

Return, O my soul, to your rest,
for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

For you have delivered my soul from death,
      my eyes from tears,
      my feet from stumbling.
